What does car insurance cover?

Car insurance isn’t a one-size-fits-all product; there are numerous types of coverage that can be combined. Snyder explained that the premium for each type of coverage is calculated separately, based on certain personal and risk factors, and then added together to calculate your total annual premium.

Comprehensive

Damage to your car that isn’t caused by a car collision is covered by comprehensive coverage. This includes theft, fire, vandalism, natural calamities (such as hail or flood damage), and animal collisions (such as hitting a deer).

Your comprehensive coverage can also cover damage to your windshield. Comprehensive coverage in some states provides glass repair and replacement with no deductible, however this varies by state. When purchasing your policy, inquire about the terms with your representative.

Collision

This is a first-party coverage designed to cover damage to vehicles owned or leased by the policyholder. Collision coverage, unlike property damage liability (discussed below), pays to repair your own car in the event of an accident. The amount of your collision deductible will be deducted from your claim payment.

It’s commonly referred regarded as “full coverage” when you have both comprehensive and collision coverage.
